Despite the declaration of a national emergency, the Department of Homeland Security is still being forced to issue increasingly dire warnings about the situation involving the southern border.
This latest announcement is especially concerning as the DHS alludes to an “illegal immigrant superhighway.”
With the hundreds of thousands of migrants funneling through Mexico to the United States, senior DHS officials admit that, “the result is an illegal immigration superhighway that’s flowing through Mexico.”
DHS announced over 100,000 migrants were apprehended just in the last month. The substantial number has filled detention centers to capacity, including makeshift shelters meant to catch the overflow.
With detention facilities filled to bursting, Border Patrol had no choice but to release thousands of migrants into the U.S., many of whom will become illegal residents if they are not diligent about completing the asylum process.
President Trump has tweeted his demand for Democrats to work with Republicans in order to solve the problem. A sentiment many, like fellow Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw, share.
Recently Trump even hinted that he may be forced to shut down the border with Mexico. While that is an extreme and short term solution, if something isn’t down soon it might be the only option that works.
