The governor of California has signed a law offering all children a meal of their choice subsidized by the government, even if their parent or guardian have outstanding meal fees.
The bill forbids the “lunch shaming” custom in which children who owe the school money for meals are denied food and offered a cheaper alternative meal.
A school can no longer give a cheaper alternative meal to a pupil under the new law.
Gov. Gavin Newsom praised Ryan Kyote, a third grader at an elementary school in Napa County, in a speech Saturday which earlier this year attracted national attention to the activity by paying for all his fellow students’ food service bills at the school.
“I want to thank Ryan for his empathy and his courage in bringing awareness to this important issue,” Newsom said.
